Review: Iron Flame

Iron Flame Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Alright, let’s talk about Iron Flame. Was it perfect? Nope. Did it drag at times? Sure. But overall, this book delivered, and I’d argue it’s even better than the first—both in terms of writing and plot. Yarros really leveled up her game here, and it shows.

The pacing was a bit uneven, especially in the middle, but the story itself kept me engaged. The character development is where this book truly shines. The FMC’s growth was so satisfying to watch, and her emotional journey felt authentic and relatable. The MMC? Absolute perfection. The romance between them hit all the right notes—tender, intense, and beautifully woven into the story.

And can we talk about that ending? It was such a pleasant surprise and set up some seriously intriguing possibilities for the next book. The twists and revelations had me audibly gasping, and now I’m dying to get my hands on Onyx Storm. Yarros left us on a high note, and the buildup for what’s to come is chef’s kiss.

The world-building in Iron Flame also deserves some love. It’s richer and more immersive than in the first book, and the stakes feel higher. You can tell Yarros has really settled into this world, and she’s taking us along for the ride. The emotional beats hit hard, too, especially the themes of love, sacrifice, and resilience. This book knows how to punch you in the gut and make you thank it for the privilege.

Favorite quotes? These ones stole the show for me:

- “And so the war of the father becomes that of the son.”

Chills. And then this one? Straight to my heart:

- “You want to know something true? Something real? I love you. I’m in love with you. I have been since the night the snow fell in your hair and you kissed me for the first time. I’m grateful my life is tied to yours because it means I won’t have to face a day without you in it. My heart only beats as long as yours does, and when you die, I’ll meet Malek at your side. It’s a damned good thing that you love me, too, because you’re stuck with me in this life and every other that could possibly follow.”

Like, hello? Who gave Yarros permission to write something so romantic it’s borderline unfair?

If you’re into epic romances, high stakes, and an ending that will leave you craving more, this book is worth picking up. It’s not flawless, but it’s a journey you won’t regret taking.
