A Shadow in the Ember by Jennifer L. ArmentroutMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Note: I decided to read this after reading the first three books in the Blood and Ash series, following recommendations from the official series website and others, to minimize confusion and have the best reading experience.
This interconnected series is such a beautifully crafted puzzle, and I'm having an absolute blast piecing it all together! With each book, I get more information and more questions, which just keeps me hooked. I was a little hesitant to leave off on the cliffhanger from The Crown of Gilded Bones and jump into this story before finding out what happens on the Blood and Ash side. But now that I’ve finished A Shadow in the Ember, I can confidently say it provided so much context to the Blood and Ash series. It answered a lot of my questions and made me completely fall head over heels for Sera and Ash's story.
Their dynamic and story mirrored Poppy and Casteel's in a way that was so beautiful, especially knowing Poppy’s background. I really loved the similarities, as well as the key differences that made each leading woman's story unique yet connected by fate. I also completely swooned over Ash's character and mannerisms. He just stole my heart! It adds so much depth to his character in both the Flesh and Fire and Blood and Ash series, leaving me with even more questions and excitement for where both series are headed.
Favorite quotes:
-“He was like the brightest star and the deepest night sky given mortal form. And he was utterly beautiful in this form, wholly terrifying.”
This quote perfectly encapsulates the duality of Ash’s character. He's both captivating and intimidating, beautiful and dangerous. It really sets the tone for his presence in the story.
-“Love is the one thing that not even fate can contend with.”
This quote is so powerful and speaks to the overarching themes of the series. It emphasizes the strength of love and its ability to transcend even the most powerful forces. It gives me hope for both couples.
A Shadow in the Ember is a fantastic addition to this interconnected world. It provides crucial context for the Blood and Ash series while also telling a compelling and captivating story of its own. If you’re invested in this world and its characters, this is a must-read. It deepens the mythology, enhances the existing storylines, and gives us another couple to root for. As always, I highly, highly recommend this book and the series as a whole. I'll be jumping right into A War of Two Queens as soon as I finish this review!
