Alright, so while A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire didn't quite hit the same heights as the first book, I'm still seriously hooked! This one was definitely more about laying the groundwork for the rest of the series, with tons of new information revealed (and just as many questions left unanswered!). Honestly, I'm not even mad about it. It felt like we needed this context.
The pacing is definitely slower than the first book, but I surprisingly really enjoyed it. It gave us time to really delve into everything Poppy's been through, adding so much depth to her story and her relationship with Casteel. This book was raw, romantic, and seriously tugged at my heartstrings. I'm not ashamed to admit I cried like a baby during some scenes!
I think a lot of what made this book so impactful was the emotional journey. We see Poppy grappling with her past and present, and it makes her connection with Casteel even more powerful. It's not just about the physical attraction (though that's definitely still there!), but about a deep understanding and acceptance of each other's vulnerabilities.
Favorite quotes:
-“Make me feel incompetent and kill more than me, Princess.”
This line just perfectly captures the dynamic between Poppy and Casteel. It's playful, but also hints at the deeper power struggle between them.
-“You’re beautiful when you’re quiet and somber, but when you laugh? You rival the sunrise over the Skotos Mountains.”
Ugh, Casteel's words always get me! This one is just so poetic and romantic. It shows how deeply he sees Poppy and appreciates all sides of her.
Overall, I highly recommend this series so far. It's got everything I love in a fantasy romance: compelling characters, a complex plot, and plenty of emotional moments. I'm definitely diving straight into the next book as soon as I post this review!
