Wow. I really didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did, but I was so pleasantly surprised. Honestly, I went in with low expectations based on my first impressions, and by the end, I was completely hooked. The story is so original and fresh, and it grabbed my attention right from the start. One of the standout features for me was the adventure/game aspect—chef’s kiss. It brought such an exciting dynamic to the plot that kept me engaged the entire time.
The mystery surrounding both the FMC and MMC’s pasts was also executed so well. It was clear that the author was slowly unraveling secrets, keeping me on the edge of my seat, waiting for the big reveal. And when the plot twist hit at the end? Let’s just say I didn’t see it coming, but it made perfect sense. It left me reeling, and I couldn’t help but appreciate how everything came together in a completely satisfying way.
The pacing, writing, and character development really solidified my love for this book. The relationships felt real, the stakes were high, and the twists kept me guessing. I found myself deeply invested in both the characters and the story, and I think that’s the mark of a great book. Kerri Maniscalco knows how to keep her readers on their toes while building tension and giving them a payoff they won’t forget.
If you’re a fan of romantasy—books with a perfect mix of romance and fantasy—this is definitely one you don’t want to miss. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a gripping, emotional, and unpredictable read.
Favorite quote from this book was:
- “Her father had told her repeatedly that fear was the one force that drove all darkness in the world. Love, on the other hand, was the greatest source of power. Love strengthened the weakest, gave them a ferocity that fear never offered. Mothers defended their children. Partners, friends, good people stared down evil, becoming something to be feared. Because of love. Yet love wasn't the path Camilla had chosen. She'd succumbed to that same moral trap. Change was terrifying. The unknown always was. It was the very essence of its being unknown that made it so. The familiar was comforting even when it wasn't necessarily good.”
This quote really struck me and captured the entire essence of the story. The juxtaposition of fear and love, the struggle of choosing between comfort and change—it’s so powerful. It left me reflecting long after I finished reading.
